Finally started my first week volunteering as a Bo

Finally started my first week volunteering as a Books & Buddies mentor with @spreadthewordnv ! 🎉 The school background check and finger printing took long (but absolutely worth the wait).

Once a week, I work one-on-one with students for about 30 mins each. We read together, play word games, and get to know each other. After our time together, they get to take a book home.

A free book every week! It could be a book we read together, or another selection of their choice.

My first book buddy loves all things Disney channel, including the Descendants and the Jonas Brothers. She selected a Jonas Brothers chapter book for our time together. As we read about amps and guitar necks that were long like an ostrich, I had a really cool experience.

My Book Buddy didn’t understand what we were reading. English isn’t the only language spoken in my Book Buddy’s home. I think she reads these words very literal. She was imagining a guitar with an actual “neck” like a human!

I drew a guitar and used the illustration to show her. I also talked about what an ostrich is. I tried to describe this very long bird to someone who had never seen one, or at least heard it called an ostrich.

I think I did an ok job explaining about rock bands and birds . . . because she took the Jonas Brothers book home!

I left this volunteer time thinking about words and characters. Those shown on Disney, and the ones we write as creators. They are ALL important.

Interestingly enough, as I left the school, the library had a banner in front saying “All Characters Welcome.” How true!

Sharing some pictures of the bookshelf filled with donated books for these kids to read and take. Also, sharing the really cool art made by the kids. Loved seeing these sculptured profiles lining the hallway.

Just like books and characters, these faces are all welcome. Looking forward to this year of being a Book Buddy. 💕 🎸

Had a great morning volunteering at the @spreadthewordnv warehouse cleaning books.

This nonprofit donates 70,000 books a month to schools and children. They are passionate about promoting literacy and have many amazing programs.

My church is doing a service project with them in January. A few of us went to the headquarters today to learn how to clean the books. Excited to show others how much fun and worthwhile this volunteer opportunity is!
